    Answer the following questions:

    a) Describe John Merrick's disability. Appearance, health, speech and sensory motor problems.
He has many deformations in most of his body, so he can't live like a normal person.
He couldn't sleep and breathe like the rest of people, and he wasn't able to speak because of the deformity of his mouth.

    b) Who are the following?
Bytes: the owner of John Merrick.
Dr Treves: Doctor of the hospital in which John Merrick lives.
Mrs Mothershead: The principal maintenance woman of the hospital.
Mr Carr Gomm: The director of the hospital.
Mrs Kendal: The actress of the theatre.

    c) Why is Mr Merrick thought to be dumb? Beacuse they thought he had also mental problems because he couldn't speak normally.

    d) Have a look at The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and write down the rights that are not observed in the film.
In the film, many human rights are not observed:
    1. The conditions in which the “freaks” work are infrahuman.
    2. People treat John with inequality.
    3. The mistreatment: people laugh at John and play with him like if he was a toy.

    e) What is a “freak show”? Do they exist now?
Is a show where the participants are freak or not normal people, like short, fat, ugly people.
Nowadays, at least in Europe, they don't exist.

a)The film tells a story that took place at the end of the 19th century but can this happen nowadays?
No. Nowadays, if people saw a man with physical deformities, they will have more respect than in the 19th century, because society and culture have improved since then.
Now, we wouldn't treat these people like in the film, like freaks. Maybe some people would laugh of him, but we understand that it is not right.
They have the same rights and duties. They are as human as us.

b)We are equal but unique. What human values should be worked for a better understanding of differences between us?

c)Should the government take any special measures to help people like John Merrick?

He had a very big head caused by serious deformities in all over his body, except from his right arm. He has cronical pneumonia which didn't allow him to breath well. Also he couldn't speak at all, but in the movie he could speak. He died from asphyxia while he was trying to sleep like a normal person.

DR. TREVES: He was a doctor who worked at the royal hospital and who took care of the Elephant Man when he discovered him.
MRS. MOTHERSHEAD: She was the matron of the nurses at the Royal London Hospital
MR CARR GOMM: He was the Royal London Hospital manager and he also want to take care of John Merrick.

    a) John Merrick was ugly, he has physical deformations all over his body, principally in his face. He had a really big head which weight too much, therefore he slept sitting down in the bed. As for the way he speaks he had difficulties to pronounce properly and his mouth was deformed too. Also he has cronic bronchities and difficulties to breath.

    b) Bytes → was the man who owned the elephant man, he treated him as if he was a freak and he mistreated John Merrick.
Dr Treves → was a man who worked on the London´s hospital and then he took care of John Merrick and helped him.
Mrs Mothershead → a woman who worked on the London´s hospital and helped Dr Treves with John and she treated him really good.
Mr Carr Gomm → a man that controlls the whole London´s hospital and accepted John on his hospital.
Mrs Kendal → an actress woman of the english theatre who was very well-known and meet Merrick and she invited him to a performance for his first time.

    c) Mr Treves thought at the beggining that John Merrick was dumb because he didn´t speak becaue he was afraid of speakig with other people at loud.

    d) We can´t see in the film the right that has Merrick to be treated as the others and not to be in a freak show to let others laugh at him. The right that we all are the same and anone is above us.

    e) A freak show is kind of show that contains people with paranormal physical appereances normally and people pay money to see and laugh at them. Nowadays they don´t exist because the human rights says that those kind of dissabilities couldn´t be used to make other people have fun.

    2.-
    a) It couldn´t happen nowadays because it´s ilegal to have freak shows and to not resepect the human rights. A person with those problems won´t be treated in that way actually.
    b) We are equal in the way that we have the same rights independently from our culture, country or beliefs and for the law we all are the same no one could is more important that the other. But we are unique in the way that we all have different personalities, Ohysical appearence and different customs or beliefs.
    c) The government should give help to people in the same situation as Merrick like economic support but in the case that they can´t be cured the government should offer just help to take care of them. They shuouldn´t give too much importance to these people because they would pretend to have diseases to receive the help indeed.

Mrs Mothershead- She is the head nurse at the hospital.
Mr Carr Gomm- He was the governer of the hospital.
Mrs Kendal- She was the actress and she was very kind and loving toward the elephant man.

    c) Why is Mr Merrick thought to be dumb?
Mr. Merrick is thought to be dumb because he had so many deformations and many were near his brain, also because he didn´t speak, even though he could, he was to shy to speak at first so people thought he was dumb.

    d) Have a look at The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and write down the rights that are not observed in the film.
The people who treat the elephant man as a piece of property are not observing the right that a person cannot own another person. When Bytes makes the elephant man do all that he says, he is not observing the elephant mans right to act on his own accord.

    e) What is a “freak show”? Do they exist now?
A freak show is where a bunch of people who are different or weird looking are put into a show where they are displayed for people to see them and laugh at them or scream at them. They do not exist now. because it is against the law and it would be against human rights.

c)Should the government take any special measures to help people like John Merrick?

Karen: i think the goverment should take special measures to help people like john Merrick because this people because of are different and special and they need special treatments.

Katie: I dont think that the government should help people like John Merrick, because there are much bigger problems to worry about. John Merrick was not properly cared for when he was sick and that is what led to his horrible condition. The government should not be giving away money and assistance to people who didn´t seek help when they should have. However in the case of John Merrick it is special because his mother died when he was so young and he was left alone, however before then his mother should have seeked medical help for John. I think it is not the responsibility of the government, but of the person.

Karen: but if the people like John Merrick don´t have any help to the goverment, who they help for example to the people like scientis that they interest investigate these strange cases of these special people?Beacuse of john merrick didn´t have any help to the govermen the evil people like his bytes they mistreat him.

    The Elephant Man

    a) His name is John Merrick. His appearance is strange because he has got the syndrome of Proteus so it makes him to have chronic bronquitis and a lot of tumors on his body and his head. Also, he can't talk very well but we can understand him and his body can't move too much because he had sensory motor problems.

    b) Bytes: he's the owner of the Freak Circus and of John. He treats him like an animal and getting money from his disease.
Dr Treves: he's one doctor of the London Hospital Centre, he found John when he's visiting the circus and first he manipulated him for his expositions but then he started loving and caring him, and he’s the first one who treats John like the human he is.
Mrs Mothershead: she's the nurse who takes care of John Merrick, first she’s a little bit crude but then she wants everybody to treat him with love.
Mr Carr Gomm: he's the director of the London Hospital Centre, first he doesn't want him in his hospital because they can't cure them but when he listen John saying the Salm nº 23 he accepted him.
Mrs Kendal: she's the actress of the Theatre, when she came to visit him he gave a photo of her and the book of Romeo & Juliet.

    c) He’s considered dumb because he can’t speak really well because of the tumor of his face but we know that we were wrong the first time that we hear him speaking, he also can’t smile…

    d) The rights that they aren’t' in the film are:

    - The article nº 1 and 2 are not reflected in the film because John is treated like an animal and not like the human he is, Bytes, Sony and at first Dr. Treves are the persons who treat him like that.

-the article nº3 to 6 is not reflected in the film because he's treated like a slave and they mistreated him, Bytes and Sony are the persons who treat John this way.

    e) A freak show is a spectacle where people with different appearance, and they're treated like monsters. Nowadays they usually don't exist, but if they exist they're illegal.

    Debates.

    b) We should work different human values like respect all the people even they have different appearance or another characters, discrimination with all the people without having prejudices.
